Yeah, we never opened any Christmas Eve presents--I always assumed that was something Catholics did.

I will say that the forced few minutes of conversation actually makes it okay to buy people more banal, less spectacular gifts. That they'll get that small level of appreciation (as opposed to none at all) is actually a little encouraging.

On the other hand, watching kids tear open the present that you spent half an hour in the toy aisle agonizing over--well that'll make stop believing in Christmas altogether.

There were three of us kids when I was growing up, and Christmas morning was like a wild free-for-all, a frenzied hurricane of wrapping paper and cellophane that lasted maybe four minutes before all the presents were open. When I spent my first Xmas with my wife (when we first started dating), the festivities transpired much closer to the manner you describe. The forced yet completely genuine three minutes of conversation once once gift is open is particularly spot-on.

They also like to open gifts on Christmas Eve, which is nice for us grown-ups but not so great once you have a kid..Santy Claus and all that stuff.

that was a wonderful recollection. we still open gifts that way at jason's mom's house ; each person takes a turn. ends up taking about 2-3 hours. we take a break midway and eat some cookies or shrimp cocktail. Grammy and Poppa are always really confused by this ritual and they always end up opening their gifts out of turn. Jason's mom makes everyone do this crazy thing where you don't put your name on the gift but you sign it from a puzzling santa. such as To: Krissy From: Santa from the Block ; and it would be a bottle of J Lo Perfume or To: Grammy From: The five letter word for fat guy in a red suit Santa ; and it would be a book of cross word puzzles. Its funny b/c you are never really sure who got you the gift. The only time you know it is a gift from Jason's mom is that she leaves the price tags on everything. happy holidays!! xo the truly bizzaros
