NEW STRIP :: FUN WITH AUTOBIOGRAPHY: What Is With The Women, Part 3

Whoa, part three is large and in charge! Yow lady quit yelling at me!

I have been surprised and gratified by the number of people who have responded to this strip, both online and in the “real” world, where people will walk up to me and say “so what IS the thing with beautiful women?” As if I ever knew anyway. But still and all, it’s nice. Especially as it’s mostly girls? BEAUTIFUL girls? Weird–it’s like art macking on life.

It’s also been fun to just throw this together each week; I still have only the blurriest idea of where it will go, and how long it will take to get there. Thanks for your continued patience as I make my way towards some sort of point eventually.

Lovin the colors in the first panel.

  2. Yeah, that first panel is all kinds of awesome. The other panels are several kinds of awesome too.

on behalf of all beautiful/crazy women let me just say – I am coming to get you! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Man I hate to be the party killer but I will (just a little).

I was waiting with such anticipation regarding where you were going with this strip, hoping to high heaven you would find a way to veer away from the "all women are crazy/all beautiful women are crazy/all (insert ethnicity here) women are crazy" thing that people (not just men, women too) so often fall into when trying to categorize some women's seemingly irrational behavior in some way.

All PEOPLE are crazy. Men, women, ALL of us. I get just as irritated by women who complain that "men make no sense/men are crazy." People are complicated creatures and our emotional issues can never be boiled down to a simple "oh you're just crazy because of your gender, crazy lady/man!"

I'm assuming this strip's not over yet though so I'm not passing total final judgment on it or anything, just saying I hope you're going to find a way to paint yourself out of the "women are crazy" corner that you're in right now.

At least you didn't blame it on her period! I would've seriously doubted your cartooning ability if you went THERE.

That said, I'm interested to see where this goes, since it doesn't look like it's quite done yet. Hopefully I haven't offended you, but I had to say my piece, and I figured there might be some other people out there who thought the same thing but didn't want to appear complainey so didn't comment.

Haha you're right, Liz–I'm not done yet, although I'm not sure where I'm going. But not, I think, in the direction you think–I'm not a ranter or a hater.

I agree that both men and women can be crazy, but I think that people with a surplus of some quality of excellence (for instance: beauty, genius, creativity) can be driven a little bit crazy by it. I think that these qualities create a tension in people, the same way that there is often a tension between what a person wants and what they need. I could go on but I'll drain myself of interest in the cartoon if I think all the way through this thing here. But, suffice it to say, this is not an anti-women screed. I predict the end will be self-deprecating in some way, just to keep it true-to-life.

  6. DHARBIN! says:

I think it's important to point out, upon reflection and the advice of people smarter than myself, that this series of strips is definitely NOT meant to be a screed against women, or the kind of "all women are insane and I hate them and why don't they like me better" kind of thing. Part of the problem is reading a continuing strip one page at a time, a week apart–it gives the individual elements a lot more importance, you kind of HAVE to focus on the one page, right, whereas if you were reading it all at once you'd just zip on to page 4. Food for thought for the future, for sure.

But more importantly, this series of strips is in no way targeted at anyone, and will ultimately most likely target myself. I LIKE the crazy in girls, and that's what the strip will ultimately be about. I have had ups and downs this year so far, although overall it's been a sweet year so far; and this is my strange–probably poorly thought out–way of figuring things out and making my weekly strip somehow more personally "relevant." I definitely did not mean for this "relevance" to be at the cost of anyone's feelings, and if I've offended anyone I double-definitely apologize.

  7. MAAAAN! I someday want to wake up with your ability to color with markers. than use it quick before it flies off to you again and helps you create palettes of wonder! A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

And sure, we all are crazy. Both of us, regarding any gender. But I see this more in the overpowering humorous DHARBIN vein. All points respected folks!
